Duncan MacMillan turns compelling stories into decisive songs, building little worlds out of heartbreak and humor. Be it a teflon pan that broke his heart or a little cigarette holding the key to his past, Duncan has found a way to turn any situation on its head and grip his audience with a twist. His varied musical styles and blend of sincere emotion and comedy create a unique and exciting live show that never gets old.
Hailing from Winston Salem, NC, Duncan MacMillan grew up around music and taught himself guitar and banjo starting at the age of 15. He studied music and played in the bluegrass band at UNC Chapel Hill. He now writes and performs music drawing from folk, blues, bluegrass, and Americana.
His debut album, “Young Man Waiting”, was written in 2020 and finally recorded four years later in 2024, when he began performing regularly with his original music. The songs confront childhood, aging, and death through the eyes of a young man. Focusing on beginnings and ends, what we keep with us and leave behind, its stories are as simple as the stripped-back sounds on the album.
Duncan's sophomore album, “On Misadventure and Outrageous Fortune”, took a new approach, featuring unique instrumental arrangements and folding in elements of humor. This collection of songs was written about and inspired by moments of lowdown heartbreak and high-flying victory. Sarcastic, witty, and heartfelt, it strives to tell a story reflecting the cyclical nature of things. Anonymous critics predict that it contains the song of the summer for at least one of the next two years. Available to stream everywhere January 9th, 2026.
